That was a bad call on Monitor Closely who came out 3rd out of the 5-horse race for a losing recommendation. Both him and King's Gambit were surprised by St Moritz, the Medicean gelding from the Nicholls yard.
On Thursday, the best chance of the day seems to be with Las Verglas Star in the Newcastle 17:15 Handicap. The 3-year old gelding from the Richard Fahey yard easily won his seasonal opener at Musselburg last week, and should be taking all the beating in this race. He seems to be benefiting from being gelded and the yard is in very good form. So Las Verglas Star is a recommendation for a Place.
The Masters has started today and Rory McIlroy has started superbly with a -7. It would be great if he could go all the way. I'm still waiting for Tiger to show that he's completely back to his old self. Once he does, there won't be many better punts than on him, no matter the sport. Until he gets his swagger back, it makes sense to take a pass on him.
Place: Last Verglas Star
